1. What is Rovering?

The PO&R of the South African Scout Association describes Rovers as: “Rover Scouting is a Brotherhood of the open air and of service, the purposes of which are:
to provide encouragement for the self-training of Rovers in citizenship and service, to
encourage Rovers to pursue careers useful to themselves, and to render service to the Scout Movement and the Community”.

2. What do Rovers do?

This is a tough question, because their is no set answer. The Rover program in the crew is determined by its members, everybody having an equal say. So in answer to the above question, Rovers do whatever random awesomeness they decide on. However, we are governed by the 3 types of service: Service to self (fun, games and personal inprovement), service to others (general community service) and service to the Scout Movement (anything from helping out a troop to staffing at a provincial event).

3. Who can join Rovers?

Any man or woman between the age of 18 to 30 may apply to become a Rover at the Bothasig Rover Crew. The applicant need not be a ex-scout or scouter, in fact no scouting experience is needed! Every applicant will need to go through a minimum 3 month period as a Rover Squire before they can be invested into the crew. Current scouts may begin the Squiring process from the age of 17.5, after consideration by the Crew Council and Group Scouter. Note that scouts still busy with their Springbok Award will NOT be accepted until their award is completed or their 18th birthday.

4. Is there a future for me in Rovering?

Definately! Rovering is about personal growth and you can find reward in it from any angle. Are you an avid hiker or sportsman? Why not try the Ramblers or Sportsmans Award? Maybe you are more job or study orientated, thats okay the Careers Award is for you. In the end all these award add up to getting the BP Award, which you can think of as your Springbok for Rovering.

The awards dont end there. As a Rover you are also entitled to attend scouter training courses and receive awards such as the PLTU badge, Air Charge, Presidents Award and various others! It never ends!
